BIG-T Fender Telecaster bridge pickup by Jim Weider

"After two years of R&D, the Big T lead pickup : special alnico 3 magnets and wire winding- my '52 vintage singing Tele Tone but louder, with the feel under your fingers!" - Jim Weider

We decided to release a bridge pickup to match our BIG-T neck pickup due to customer demand. Many people, after installing the neck pickup, found they wanted something better than their current bridge to match the fine tones they were now getting from the neck pickup. Also it's convenient to buy a matched set in one place.

The best bridge pickup we've heard is the original '52 pickup in Jim's Tele, which he had been playing for over 40 years.

We came up with several ideas and had Lindy Fralin make dozens of versions using different magnets, wire, winding patterns, etc, and finally came up with a pickup that sounded as good as Jim's. Every small change in the pickup made a difference, even the style of scattering the wire as it was wound changed the pickup's character. We think you will love this pickup in any Tele - it has the strong, clear output, without being too bright or dark. Goldilocks approved.

HUM CANCELING!

It's possible to have hum canceling even with true single coil pickups, which are required for the true Telecaster sound. Using the middle position (both pickups) with one of the pickups wound backwards and with reverse magnetism will cause the pair to work like a humbucker and the hum is gone. So we wound our new Bridge pickup for hum canceling operation when used with our BIG-T neck. When just one pickup is used, there is no difference caused by the magnetism.
Neck is South Up, and bridge is South Down.

Here's Jim showing both pickups, the bridge (back) pickup is later on:

Here is a pedal demo with all the samples using BOTH BIG-T Pickups on our parts Tele. You can hear what they sound like together in humbucking mode in this video:

$AVE when buying a pair of pickups.

Use the option MAKE IT A SET to get a set for $10 off.

We have a few sets with WHITE string around the coil, as used in the 60s and 70s, there is an option if you want that version. Normally the string is black from using black wax when dipped (potted).

5-Way Super Switch

If you use both of our BIG-T pickups, you can use a 5-way SUPER SWITCH to get the normal Tele sounds (with hum-canceling middle position) plus two new useful tones. The 2nd position (closest to bridge) is a thin Strat-like tone. The 4th position is both pickups in series for a loud humbucking sound. Wiring info here:

LEFTY PICKUPS

This pickup has flat pole pieces, all the same size and height. So it's perfect for both right and left-handed guitars. No need for a specific LEFTY bridge, but we do offer a lefty neck pickup.

I have two Tele’s. A Jason Isbell Custom MIM and an American Original ‘52 Reissue. I purchased a set of these pickups and decided to put them in the Isbell as the ‘52 RI sounds pretty great already. Now, the Isbell sounds better !  I can’t believe how spectacular these Jim Weider pickups are.
So, as expected, I’ve now ordered another set for the ‘52 RI and can’t wait to hear how it will sound.
Excellent work boys !!

Just installed the BIG-T pickups.  I like them a lot - especially the bridge pickup!  It's meatier than my other tele pickups.  I can see how this solves a tele "problem" - better frequency balance between the neck and bridge pickups, so you can set your amp and not wince when you switch pickups.  Real nice.

I left the 3-way stock except put a .01 cap in place of Leo's fake bass setting – it seems to bump the mid a little. (I can still cut the tone way back in the middle position if I want to darken it up.)

Oh, man … love at first pick, for sure! Heck of a lot more grunt and body than the original – and even though I liked the one Don Mare did for me, the Big-T just has better definition by far. Even on the straight bridge position with the tone completely bypassed, it's fierce but not piercing. I can get little pick squeals and harmonics easy at low volumes … fun fun fun.

You nailed it!

The BIG-T Bridge is an amazing pickup!

I am so in love with the sound of it, my guitar is inspiring me to play and write more now that I have the bridge pickup to go with my Big-T neck pickup.
I used to just stay on the Big-T neck because my stock bridge pickup couldn't keep up with its tone, and going to the bridge was underwhelming
(quite strange for a Tele guitar). Now they are well balanced and both very unique, the combined sound is absolutely to die for.

Thanks for the great pickups, they are both easily worth their price.

Hi Mike,

I installed the BIG-T bridge in one of the new Fender Select Thinline Tele's together with the BIG-T neck and the pair sound brilliant.

With the BIG-T bridge the sound is now big and clear/clean without being overly bright or brittle sounding at the top end, but certainly still has that big tele twang.

I noticed even with overdrive, this pickup does not get harsh/grainy at the high end and remains detailed and articulate across the frequency range. This is a great match for the BIG-T neck.

The middle position has a real clarity to it, but once again a big clear sound and not at all harsh or thin at the high end. Classic Tele middle.

The BIG-T neck is just perfect (have it installed in all my Tele's) .

Overall great pickup choice.
